7-Day Kilimanjaro Climb — Machame Route
Machame Gate – Shira – Barranco – Barafu – Uhuru Peak – Mweka
- Group
- Mid-range
Walk through banana and coffee farms on Kilimanjaro's slopes to a 70-metre waterfall, then roast and grind your own coffee with a Chagga family.
Materuni is a Chagga village high on the green lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, forty minutes from Moshi. A local guide walks you along red-earth paths between banana plants and coffee bushes to the Materuni waterfall, which drops seventy metres into a cool, clear pool. Swim if you are brave — the water comes straight off the mountain.
Back in the village a Chagga family shows you how coffee goes from red cherry to cup: picking, peeling, roasting over the fire and grinding by hand while everyone sings. Lunch is a home-cooked meal of banana stew, greens and fresh fruit.
It is the perfect gentle day before or after a Kilimanjaro climb, and children love it.
Pick-up at 08:30 in Moshi and a 40-minute drive up to Materuni. Walk 45 minutes to the waterfall and swim or relax by the pool. Return to the village for lunch with a Chagga family, then learn how coffee is picked, roasted and ground by hand. Back in Moshi by 16:00.

Easy to moderate — about 45 minutes each way on uneven paths, with some steps near the waterfall. Wear shoes with grip.
Yes, many climbers do. The walk is gentle and the lunch is a nice way to celebrate.
