Mount Meru is Kilimanjaro’s quieter, steeper neighbour, and at 4,566 metres the second-highest mountain in Tanzania. It rises straight out of Arusha National Park, which makes this day hike unlike any other: for the first hours you are walking through the bush, with giraffe watching you from the acacias and buffalo grazing in the glades.
Because of the wildlife, every group walks with an armed park ranger as well as an experienced mountain guide. The path leads under a huge strangler fig that arches over the trail, past the Tululusia waterfall and up into dense montane forest, home to colobus monkeys, turacos and trees older than the park.
Lunch is at Miriakamba Hut at 2,514 metres, with views into Meru’s great broken crater and, on clear days, across the plains to the snows of Kilimanjaro. It is a demanding but deeply rewarding day — and you are back at Katiti in time for tea.

Questions
Why is a ranger needed?
Mount Meru rises from inside Arusha National Park, and buffalo and elephant use the same paths. An armed ranger walks with every group as a park rule — it is also what makes the walk so exciting.
How hard is it?
It is a real hike: about 13 km in total with 1,000 m of climbing, some of it steep. Good general fitness is enough; the pace is steady and there are many stops.
