The Maasai have grazed their cattle across these plains for centuries, and many families still live in traditional bomas within an hour of the lodge. This visit is arranged with one such family, in small groups, so it feels like being a guest rather than part of an audience.
You are welcomed with songs, and the young men show off the adumu, the jumping dance, in a blur of red cloth and beads. Then the pace slows: you step inside the low, round houses the women build from wood, mud and grass, see how the thorn enclosure protects the cattle at night, and hear about family life, cattle and the changes that schooling and phones are bringing.
The heart of the visit is time with the women over beadwork and sweet chai. With your guide translating, it is a chance to ask anything — and to be asked plenty in return. A fee for every visitor goes straight to the community, and the crafts you may want to buy are made by the women you meet.
