Not everyone has a week to climb Kilimanjaro, but everyone who stays near it wants to stand on it. The Marangu day hike is the best way to do exactly that: a full day on the mountain’s south-eastern slopes, walking through one of the most beautiful montane rainforests in Africa to Mandara Hut, the first camp on the classic summit route.
The path is wide and well kept and climbs steadily for about eight kilometres. Above you, black-and-white colobus monkeys crash through the canopy; around you, giant ferns, old fig trees and moss-hung branches drip in the mist. Your certified mountain guide sets an easy pace and stops to show you orchids, chameleons and the plants the Chagga people have used as medicine for generations.
After lunch at Mandara, a short extra walk takes you to the rim of the Maundi Crater, from where the plains open up towards Kenya and, on clear days, the snows of Kibo appear above the trees. It is a long day, and one guests remember long after their safari.

Questions
How fit do I need to be?
Comfortable walking for five to six hours with a steady climb of about 900 metres. The path is good, the pace is slow and you can turn back at any time; children from about 10 years old usually manage well.
Will I feel the altitude?
Mandara Hut is at 2,720 m, well below where altitude sickness usually starts. Some people feel a little breathless on the steeper parts — walking slowly and drinking water is all you need.
