How to combine the parks and the coast: order, flights, number of nights and where to stay on the island.
Safari followed by beach is Tanzania’s classic combination, and for good reason. The parks and Zanzibar are well connected by short flights, so it is easy to do both in one trip without wasting days on the road.
Safari first, beach second
We almost always recommend finishing on the beach. Safari days start early, the roads are dusty and there is a lot to take in. Ending with a few quiet days by the Indian Ocean lets you rest, sort your photos and fly home relaxed.
Getting from the parks to Zanzibar
Scheduled light-aircraft flights link Arusha, the Lake Manyara airstrip and several Serengeti airstrips with Zanzibar every day. The flight from Arusha takes about 1 hour 20 minutes; from the Serengeti it is around 2 hours with a stop. Luggage is usually limited to 15 kg per person in soft bags — we can store anything extra in Arusha.
How many nights on the beach?
- Three nights gives you two full days to relax.
- Four or five nights leaves time for Stone Town, a spice farm and a day at sea.
- A week is perfect for a honeymoon or if you like diving.
Which part of the island?
Nungwi and Kendwa in the north have the smallest tides, so you can swim at any time of day, and lively beach bars. Matemwe in the north-east is quiet, faces Mnemba Atoll and has some of the best snorkelling. Paje and Jambiani on the east coast have wide lagoons, seaweed farms and kitesurfing. Stone Town is best for one night of history, markets and food — not for swimming.
Things to do beyond the beach
- A guided walk through Stone Town’s narrow streets and carved doors.
- A spice-farm tour with a Swahili lunch.
- A dhow trip to a sandbank with snorkelling and a seafood lunch.
- Jozani Forest to see the rare red colobus monkeys.
- A sunset sail from Nungwi or Stone Town.
When to go
June to October and December to February are dry and sunny on the coast. March to May brings the long rains, when some beach hotels close. November has short showers but is still a lovely time to visit.
