The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest unbroken caldera, about 20 kilometres across and 600 metres deep. Its walls hold in a remarkable density of wildlife: buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, lions, hyenas and one of Tanzania’s last black rhino populations.
Most visitors spend half or a full day on the crater floor, sleeping on the rim or in the Karatu highlands nearby.
Cool mornings on the rim, good visibility on the floor.
Lush grass, fewer vehicles, occasional mud.
It can be at midday. Descending at opening time gives the quietest hours.
