At 5,895 metres, Kilimanjaro is the highest free-standing mountain in the world. You walk through five climate zones — farmland, rainforest, heath, alpine desert and arctic summit — on well-used routes that need no technical climbing.
The main challenge is altitude. Longer routes such as Machame (7 days) and Lemosho (8 days) give your body more time to adjust.
Drier trails and clearer summit mornings.
Quieter, wetter and colder; experienced climbers only.
Comfortable with 5–7 hours of walking on consecutive days. Training hikes help.
Ten years old on the day of the climb.
