A Perfect 3-Day Itinerary Around Arusha and Moshi

Questo articolo è in inglese.

Three days, two mountains, a national park, a waterfall and the best coffee you will ever drink — a slow, varied itinerary from our door.

If you have limited time in northern Tanzania, the area around Arusha and Moshi packs an extraordinary amount into a few days. This itinerary uses Katiti Lodge as a base, so you unpack once, sleep in the same quiet room every night and spend your days out on the land rather than on long transfers.

Day 1 — Arusha National Park

Leave after an early coffee for Arusha National Park, about thirty minutes away. Drive slowly through the Ngurdoto forest, where black-and-white colobus monkeys leap between fig trees, then stop at the rim of the Ngurdoto Crater. Mid-morning, the open glades of “Serengeti Ndogo” are full of giraffe, zebra and buffalo.

Picnic by the Momella Lakes — often pink with flamingos — and in the afternoon take a walking safari with an armed park ranger. You will be back at the lodge in time for a shower and a sundowner in the garden.

Day 2 — Materuni Waterfalls and coffee

Today is gentler. Drive up the green slopes of Kilimanjaro above Moshi to the Chagga village of Materuni and walk about an hour through banana groves and coffee bushes to an 80-metre waterfall. Swim in the cold pool if you are brave, then have lunch with a local family.

The afternoon belongs to coffee: you pick the cherries, roast the beans over a fire and pound them in a wooden mortar while your hosts sing, before brewing a cup of the freshest coffee you will ever taste.

Day 3 — Your choice of mountain, lake or culture

For walkers, spend the last day on a mountain: either the Kilimanjaro day hike through rainforest to Mandara Hut, or the wilder Mount Meru hike past giraffe and buffalo to Miriakamba Hut. Both are full days; both feel like a real achievement.

For something quieter, drive to Lake Chala, a turquoise crater lake on the Kenyan border, to canoe beneath the crater walls and picnic in near silence. Or spend a morning with a Maasai family and an afternoon in the garden with a book.

Practical tips

  • Book experiences when you book your room — we plan the days around your arrival and departure flights.
  • Bring layers: mornings on the mountains are cool, afternoons can be hot.
  • The best months for clear mountain views are June to October and January to February.

Three days is enough to fall in love with this corner of Tanzania — and, very often, to start planning the next trip.
