From flamingo-pink lakes to rainforest hikes, coffee ceremonies and Maasai beadwork — ten of the best ways to spend your days near the lodge.
Arusha is one of Tanzania’s most exciting regions: a lively town surrounded by mountains, forests, crater lakes and wildlife, with the great parks of the north just down the road. These are ten of our guests’ favourite ways to spend their days when they stay with us.
1. Go on safari in Arusha National Park
The closest park to the lodge and one of the most varied: forest, crater, lakes and open glades in a single day. Giraffe and buffalo are almost guaranteed, and the colobus monkeys are the best in the region.
2. Walk with a ranger
Arusha National Park is one of the few places in northern Tanzania where you can leave the car and walk among the animals, accompanied by an armed park ranger.
3. Hike on Kilimanjaro
The Marangu day hike takes you through the mountain’s rainforest to Mandara Hut at 2,720 metres — the perfect taste of Africa’s highest peak.
4. Climb into the forests of Mount Meru
Quieter and wilder than Kilimanjaro, Meru’s lower slopes are full of wildlife. The day hike to Miriakamba Hut passes under a giant fig-tree arch and the Tululusia waterfall.
5. Swim beneath the Materuni Waterfalls
An easy walk through Chagga coffee farms leads to one of the tallest waterfalls on Kilimanjaro’s slopes.
6. Roast your own coffee
Kilimanjaro coffee is famous worldwide. In Materuni you pick, roast, pound and brew it yourself with a local family.
7. Canoe on Lake Chala
A turquoise crater lake on the Kenyan border, hidden behind steep walls — one of the most peaceful places in the country.
8. Spend time with a Maasai family
Visit a traditional boma, learn about cattle and family life, and try your hand at beadwork with the women.
9. Explore Arusha town
Browse the Maasai market and the central market, visit the Cultural Heritage Centre and stop for a coffee at one of the town’s roasteries.
10. Do nothing at all
After a long flight or a long climb, one of the best things to do is simply stay: breakfast in the garden, a book on the veranda, a cold drink as the lanterns come on in the courtyard. That is what Katiti is for.
Ask us about any of these when you book — we arrange transport, guides and packed lunches, and plan each day around the weather and your flights.
