What budget, mid-range and luxury really mean on safari — and where it is worth spending more.
Accommodation is the biggest part of any safari price, so it helps to know what each level really offers. The good news: at every level you see the same animals. What changes is comfort, location and service.
Budget
Simple lodges and permanent tented camps, often just outside the park gates. Rooms are clean with private bathrooms and hot water; meals are usually buffet style. You may drive a little further each morning to reach the best game areas, and swimming pools are less common.
Right for you if: you want to see as much as possible for your money and don’t mind simple rooms.
Mid-range
Comfortable lodges and tented camps inside or right next to the parks. Expect a pool, good food, more space and staff who know you by name after one night. This is the level most of our guests choose, and the one our trip planner uses as its standard.
Right for you if: you want comfort and a good location without luxury prices. Families usually love this level.
Luxury
Small camps of eight to twelve tents in the very best locations, with private decks, outdoor baths, excellent private guiding and personal service. Some are mobile and move with the Great Migration, so you wake up close to the herds. Meals are often served wherever you like — in the bush, on your deck or by candlelight under an acacia tree.
Right for you if: it is a once-in-a-lifetime trip, a honeymoon or a big birthday.
Tented camp or lodge?
A modern safari tent is nothing like camping. It has a real bed, electric light, a flush toilet and a hot shower. What makes it special is the sound: lions calling at night, hippos grunting in the river. Lodges have solid walls and are a better choice if you are a light sleeper.
Where to spend more
- In the Serengeti, where location makes the biggest difference to what you see.
- On your last safari night, to finish on a high.
- On a honeymoon, where privacy matters.
- Less so in Karatu, where you mostly sleep before an early start to the crater.
